The Commonwealth’s Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer of Greensville County and the City of Emporia. As such, the Office’s primary responsibility is to enforce state and local criminal laws by reviewing, preparing, and prosecuting all felony and Class 1 misdemeanor cases that arise within the County. The Office prosecutes criminal cases in all levels of local courts, including Greensville Circuit Court, Greensville and Emporia General District Court, and Greensville and Emporia Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
The Office works closely with the Victim/Witness Assistance Program staff to protect the rights of victims and witnesses and to counsel them as they move through the judicial process.
In addition, the Office provides legal advice to the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office, the Emporia Police Department, the Emporia Sheriff’s Office, the local Virginia State Police office, Greensville Correctional Center staff, magistrates, and other local officials and citizens.
